Couples Temperature Reading

This document is a summary and detailed guide on how to do the Couples Temperature Reading activity, as created by Late Spiritual Psychologist, Virginia Satir.

It is advised to do this Temperature reading exactly as described for the best outcome.

This process is best used as a preventive measure to future conflict. It makes sure the 2 people are up to date and on the same page and can stop misunderstandings before they start. It can also be used in times of conflict and hardship, as a way to refind balance between a couple. Conflict and fighting often happens due to a build up of things we may be accustomed to “sweeping under the rug” in relationships. The Temperature Reading aims to bring these things to the surface before they become a larger issue.

This activity is summarized and written into a step by step activity from the 1991 text ‘Virginia Satir: Foundational Ideas,’ edited by Barbra Jo Brothers.

Self Temperature Reading

This document is a summary and detailed guide on how to do the Self Temperature Reading on ‘Getting to Know the Self’ activity, this activity is a modified version of the Couples Temperature Reading based on the work of Late Spiritual Psychologist Virginia Satir.

This process is taken and modified from a couples therapy activity that supports healthy relationships. However, it can be used to produce and promote a healthy relationship with the self as well!

Our most constant relationship throughout our lives is our relationship with ourselves. Our relationship with ourselves is the base from which all other relationships come from, and can be a great source of love and inspiration in our lives! You can do this practice for a period of time as you need, such as weeks or months, and you can also let it go and pick it up again as needed throughout your life. It is best to do this every day, especially when you are getting started with it.

This activity is modified from a step by step activity from the 1991 text ‘Virginia Satir: Foundational Ideas,’ edited by Barbra Jo Brothers.
